Pinecone Central’s baseball complex a hit with players, fans alike

Sounds of the all-American sport of baseball resounded last weekend at the brand-new four-field baseball complex in Sartell’s Pinecone Central Park.

From June 7-9, teams came from far and wide to participate in the Pinecone Park Inaugural Baseball Invitational tournament. The tourney served as a grand opening for the complex, which was so many years in the making.

Ride organizer Cliff Borgerding was on hand at the registration table in Albany bright and early Saturday to coordinate volunteers and get riders on their way. About 300 participants pedaled the trail in this 14th annual event.

Cliff Borgerding was a happy man last Saturday as the sun made an appearance for the 14th annual Caramel Roll Ride along stretches of the Lake Wobegon Regional Trail.

Nearly 300 bikers showed up in Albany to take part in what has become a yummy tradition. At the registration table and along the various routes of the ride, gooey caramel rolls are available to participants.

For as long as she can remember, Bernie Sykora of Sartell wanted to be a priest. When she was a little girl playing in her mother’s hollyhock garden, she would pretend the cup-shaped flowers were little chalices, and she would use them in her play-imitation of saying the Catholic Mass.

The All Saints Academy, St. Joseph campus, graduated its first kindergarten class on May 31.

The kindergarten and sixth-grade graduation ceremony was held in the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The kindergarten class, taught by Elisha Konz, had 13 graduates and the sixth-grade class, taught by Susan Huls, had 23 graduates.

Basketball coach Marcus Oistad said the past week or so has been one of the most “fun and exciting times” of his life – a virtual “whirlwind.”

Oistad was recently named the new head basketball coach for the Sartell Sabres. He will replace previous long-time coach Dave Angell, who has retired after 31 years of coaching in Sartell.

Seeing is believing.

Pinecone Central Park in Sartell was mostly just an abstract dream – that is, until last weekend when many people had a chance to see and to experience what a wonderful park it is.

From June 7-9, the park’s baseball-field complex was the site of the “Pinecone Park Inaugural Baseball Invitational” tournament, with 14 teams of young people competing in pool-and-bracket play.
